Overview:
The students will identify foods that come from plants and animals. This lesson can be used to teach health, nutrition, or food - related topics.
Approximate Duration:  1–2 class periods (50 minutes each)
Content Standards:
  • Life Science
         The students will become aware of the characteristics and life cycles of organisms and understand their relationships to each other and to their environment.
Benchmarks:
  • LS-E-B2
         observing, comparing, and grouping plants and animals according to likenesses and/or differences;

Educational Technology Standards:  
  • Identify, explain, and effectively use input, output and storage devices of computers and other technologies (e.g., keyboard, mouse, scanner, adaptive devices, monitor, printer floppy disk, hard drive).

Objectives:
The students will
  • state and understand that foods come from plants and animals, and
  • be able to categorize foods as plants or animals.
Lesson Materials and Resources:
  • Scissors and glue for each student

KidPix or other clipart program

Background Information:
The students should be familiar with plants and animal food sources.
Lesson Procedures:
  1. Brainstorm with the students foods that come from plants and animals.

  2. Cut apart the pictures of foods from "Food Pictures." On the board, write the titles, "Food From Plants" and "Food From Animals."

  3. Give each student one food picture and ask him/her to go to the board and place it beneath the correct title.

  4. The students will use KidPix to create graphics of foods that come from animals and foods that come from plants. If the software is not available, students can draw the pictures with paper and pencil.

  5. The students will complete the "Plant and Animal Foods" activity sheet.
Assessment Procedures:
  • Correct completion of food picture activity.

Consider different learning styles and abilities when planning this lesson.

Students with Sensory Impairments
Vision: Provide the student with the use of large print and pictures. Student may use colored overlays. Pair student with a non-disabled student. Change the monitor font size and/background colors.

Hearing: Student with limited hearing: Have a peer or adult to make sure directions are understood. Teacher should maintain eye contact with the student during class discussions. Teacher may use a checklist for directions enabling the student to check off steps.

Student with Attention/Behavior Difficulties:
Reinforce the student for sitting appropriately while cutting the food pictures based on time/length. Deliver reinforcement for any and all measures of improvement. Provide learning stations in classroom for activities using 10-15 minute intervals. Provide a checklist and steps for each activity.

Explorations and Extensions:
  • The students will classify foods from the school lunch menu for a week.

  • Make a wall chart to hang in class and ask the students to add pictures of foods throughout the year.
