Overview:
The students will compose a television advertisement for a healthy food or food product based on nutritional information. This lesson can be used to teach health, nutrition, or food - related topics.
Approximate Duration:  5 class periods (50 minutes each)

Objectives:
The students will
  • discuss different types of commercial advertisements,
  • identify healthful and unhealthful foods in advertisements,
  • write a commercial advertisement for a certain food item based on the nutrients present in the item, and
  • produce and dramatize the commercial.

Background Information:
Students should have basic understanding for using the Internet for research. They also should be knowledgable about basic nutritional priniciples and the Food Guide Pyramid.
Lesson Procedures:

  1. Teacher will conduct a discussion with the students about advertisements and commercials found in television, news, and other media.

  2. Students will research food advertisements on the Internet.

  3. Students will identify healthful and unhealthful foods presented in the advertisements.

  4. Allow students to work in groups of three. Have the students choose a healthful food item and compose a 30-second television advertisement for it.

  5. As part of the advertisement, the students will concentrate on the nutrients present in the particular food.

  6. Encourage the students to be as creative as possible. (A teacher-provided sample may be helpful.)

  7. Allow students time to work on their advertisements.

  8. When all groups have finished, have them present their commercials. Videotape their presentations.

  9. Later, while viewing recorded commercials, have the advertised foods available for them to sample.

  • Presentation of commercial advertisement using an adaptation of the rubric for assessing projects found in the Reproducible Materials section.

  • Use the computer to design a print advertisement, using software such as KidPix Studio Deluxe.
  • Critique ads on the Internet and magazines.
  • Submit print ads to the local newspaper.
