Overview:
In this activity, students will organize information about parts of bones, purposes of bones, and foods that promote healthy bones in graphic organizer form. This lesson can be used to teach health, nutrition, or food - related topics.
Approximate Duration:  1-2 class periods (50 minutes each)
Content Standards:
  • Standard 1
         Students will comprehend concepts and strategies related to health promotion and disease prevention.
  • Standard 3
         Students will demonstrate the ability to practice positive health behaviors and reduce health risks.

Objectives:
The students will
  • discuss structure and purposes of bones,
  • list healthful foods that promote strong bones,
  • create graphic organizers, and
  • organize information on parts of a bone, purpose of bones, and foods that promote healthy bones.
Lesson Materials and Resources:
Index cards for concept mapping if software is not available.

Inspiration or other software to create graphic organizers

Other:

Background Information:
The students should have an understanding of creating charts and graphs. Students should be familiar with Inspiration or similiar software.
Lesson Procedures:
  1. Distribute "The Bones" article to students. Have them read the article.

  2. Students will discuss information contained in the article.

  3. Assign topics: for example, foods that promote healthy bones, purposes of bones, parts of a bone, etc.

  4. Have the students create a graphic organizer for their topic. Possibilities include examples for diagrams, blocks, charts, etc. The chart may be completed as a class, by groups or pairs or by individuals. Inspiration software may also be used.

  5. Students will share their organizers with the class.
Assessment Procedures:
  • Students will list the parts of a bone, purposes of bones, and foods that promote healthy bones.
  • Students will also be assessed on their graphic organizers and presentations.
Accommodations/Modifications:
Consider different learning styles and abilities when planning this lesson.

Explorations and Extensions:
  • The students will organize the same information in outline form, using Inspiration.
  • The students will label a diagram of a bone.
  • The students will obtain animal bones from a butcher or meat department and examine the structure of the bone by conducting a cross-section.

Reflections:
The teacher should have an understanding of the functions, purposes, and needs of healthy bones. Safety procedures must be adhered to when conducting experiments.
