Overview:
Snacks are an important part of one’s eating plan. Normally one’s body needs to refuel every 3-4 hours. Snacks can help boost energy between meals. Healthful snacking is important to good nutrition and can fit nicely into any eating plan, especially for those students who are physically active. Refueling provides kids with more of the nutrients they need and gives them extra energy. In this lesson, students will become aware of foods that make healthy snacks. Students will prepare a healthy snack and create an ad for a healthful snack. Finally, students will review healthy snack choices according to their energy needs. Other:

  • Background Information:
Children benefit from eating snacks but need to choose snacks that provide the most nutrients are the correct amount of calories to meet their energy needs. Research indicates that small frequent meals help control hunger and overeating. Remind students to always wash their hands before preparing and eating snacks. Teachers need to allow students time to wash their hands before preparing the snacks in this lesson.
    Lesson Procedures:
    1. Ask students to define the word “snacks”.
      • Snack foods are foods eaten between meals to supply extra nutrients and energy.
      • Snacks also help us meet the required number of servings we need each day from each of the food groups from MyPyramid.

    2. Have students brainstorm the kinds of foods eaten for snacks. Use Inspiration to list and organize snack items according to food groups or by fat, sodium, and sugar content. Use a chalkboard or overhead projector if Inspiration is not available.

    3. Snacks should be packed with nutrients –minerals, vitamins, etc. and be low in fat, sodium and sugar. From the list provided by the students, ask the students to identify the snacks that are “Nutrient packed”. Eating too many snacks that are high in fat and sugar and low in vitamins and minerals can lead to gaining weight.

    4. Distribute the “SENSATIONAL SNACKS” handout to each student. Review the list.

    5. Allow each student to bring a snack to eat during the school day. Have the student set a goal to choose a snack from the “Sensational Snack” list.

    6. If Internet access is available, have students play the Power Panther Calorie Challenge. Ask the students what were some healthy snacks to eat? Why were they healthy? Which type of activities took the most time to burn all of the calories from foods? Which type of activities took the least amount of of time?

    7. Snack foods are advertised a great deal on television and in magazines.
      • Divide the class into small groups.
      • Each group should develop a newspaper, television, magazine or radio advertisement for a snack that is healthful.
      • Each group will be given 2-3 minutes to present its advertisement.
      • Audio visual aids and/or props may be used in the presentation. Classes that have access to PowerPoint can make slide presentations.
      • Think of an interesting and fun way to present a healthy snack to the class so that everyone will want to try it!

    8. Activity: Prepare a healthy snack!!
The class will prepare: Dynamite Sticks, Ants on a Log, and Fruit Fantasy.
      • Food items and supplies for this activity should be arranged for and ordered from the school food service or purchased from a local grocery store. See snack requisition form.
      • Arrange in advance for parent volunteers to help with snack preparation.
      • On day of snack preparation, set up stations for each snack. Each station should include ingredients, supplies needed to prepare snack and a copy of the recipe.
      • Distribute a copy of the Healthy Snack recipes to each student.
      • Divide the class into small groups. Each group should rotate to each station and prepare each snack.
      • Allow students time to wash their hands before preparing the snacks.

Note: The recipes provided yield 1 serving. To prepare for the entire class, multiply the amount listed in the recipe by the number of students in the class.

    Assessment Procedures:
