Overview:

Eating a good breakfast can affect overall health and school performance. In this lesson, students become familiar with the benefits of eating a good breakfast every morning, identify barriers to eating breakfast and identify healthful breakfast food choices. This lesson can be used to teach health, nutrition, and other food-related topics. |

Approximate Duration: 1-2 class periods (50 minutes each) |

- set a goal to eat four different breakfast meals from the “Bright Ideas for Breakfast” list.

Background Information: Breakfast should supply energy needed to get through the morning. Breakfast should help meet the daily Recommended Daily Allowances for protein, calcium, iron, Vitamin A, Vitamin C and calories. |
Lesson Procedures:
- Ask the students what the word “Breakfast” means?
Break: to stop
Fast: to not eat
Because you do not eat all night, it is as if you are fasting. When you get up in the morning you break your fast by eating breakfast.
- Ask the students “why it is important to eat breakfast each morning?"
Using Inspiration or index cards, students can brainstorm why it is important to eat breakfast. Share and compile answers as a class. Some ideas might include:
- Not eating breakfast is like starting out on a car trip with no gas in the tank of the car.
- Your stomach, like the gas tank of the car, is running on empty when you get up in the morning.
- You should eat breakfast because you need to add food to your stomach before you start out on your day’s journey.
- Students who skip breakfast tend to overeat later and snack on fast foods that are high in calories and low in nutrients.
- Ask the students to list some reasons for skipping breakfast or eating foods for breakfast that are not healthful choices.
Using Inspiration or index cards to compile answers. Share answers as a class. Some answers may include:
- Want to sleep more
- Don’t have enough time
- Nothing to eat at home
- Takes too long to prepare
- Ate late the night before, so was not hungry
- Distribute “Bright Ideas for Breakfast” Handout to the students.
Review. Explain that this handout includes a variety of food items that are healthful, easy to prepare and eat, make a tasty breakfast, and can be eaten on the go.
- Have each student set a goal to eat at least four different breakfasts from the “Bright Ideas for Breakfast” Handout.
- Distribute “Light Up Your Life…Eat a GO—AL Breakfast” to each student.
- Each student should complete a GO—AL Breakfast form.
- Set a date within the next week for the GO—AL to be completed. Instruct the student to fill in the completion date on the handout.
- Instruct the students to read through the food items listed on the “Bright Ideas for Breakfast” handout and then place a check next to any item they think they might like to try for breakfast over the next week.
- Discuss some of the breakfast items that students checked.
Instruct the students to record the food items they ate and drank for each breakfast on the blank lines on the GO—AL Breakfast form.
- Explain to the students, if they do not achieve the goal, they should keep trying until the goal is achieved.
- At the end of the time period, review the foods that were eaten.
- Have the students complete the “Breakfast Word Find Puzzle”.
- Distribute SEARCH FOR BREAKFAST word find puzzle to each student.
- Instruct the students to search for some healthful breakfast foods.
- Discuss the answers to the word search with the class.

Completion of “Light Up Your Life…Eat a GO-AL Breakfast”.
Completion of Breakfast Word Find Puzzle.

Accommodations should be made for children with food allergies or specific limitations in chewing and swallowing. Consider different learning styles and abilities when planning this lesson. Explorations and Extensions:
- School Breakfast Week is in March. Coordinate a breakfast activity with school food service. Several weeks prior to the lesson being taught meet with the cafeteria manager to plan a breakfast using the “Bright Ideas for Breakfast Handout” as a guideline. The cafeteria will prepare and serve the breakfast to the students.
- Have the students draw on a paper plate food and beverages that they consider to be a part of a good breakfast. Place paper plates on a bulletin board in the classroom or in the cafeteria.

Reflections:
- This lesson can be taught in three to four class periods.
- Breakfast may be the most important meal of the day! The first step in making sure one stays healthy, feels good, and has energy is to eat breakfast everyday! Eating breakfast can decrease the consumption of high fat, high sugar snacks during the day.
