Overview:
Keeping the body physically active enhances a person’s quality of life. Physical activity should become a routine part of life each day of the week. This lesson provides the students the opportunity to participate in Tail Tag as a means to increase physical activity and to track their physical activity habits over a week. This lesson can be used to teach mathematics, health, nutrition, and physical activity-related lessons.
Approximate Duration:  Several 30-50 minute class periods
Content Standards:

         Students will demonstrate the ability to practice positive health behaviors and reduce health risks.

         identify personal health needs and develop long-term goals for a healthy lifestyle;

         examine physical fitness assessments and their role in developing a personal wellness program; and

Interdisciplinary Connections:  
  • English/Language Arts : Standard 3
         Students communicate using standard English grammar, usage, sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and handwriting.
  • Physical Education : Standard 3
         Exhibits a physically active lifestyle.
Educational Technology Standards:  
  • Recognize the importance of information technology and its effect on the workplace and society.

  • Use multimedia tools and desktop publishing to develop and present computer-generated projects for directed and independent learning activities.

Objectives:
The student will:
  1. identify the benefits of physical activity,
  2. demonstrate ability to practice positive health behaviors by participating in physical activity, and
  3. complete a journal of their daily physical activity.

Lesson Materials and Resources:
Equipment:
  • one scarf, bandanna, or fabric strip per student
  • four cones
  • music or whistle
  • Let’s Get Physical Journal page for each student (located in the reproducible materials section)
  • Tape measure or yardstick

  • Background Information:
    Students should participate in physical activity 60 minutes daily, including 30 minutes of moderate physical activity to establish and maintain a healthful lifestyle.
    Lesson Procedures:
    1. Ask the students to name the benefits or reasons for doing physical activity. Write the answers on the chalkboard. Listed below are possible answers.

      • Increases energy
      • Improves fitness
      • Keeps the heart strong
      • Builds strong bones and muscles
      • Keeps the body in shape muscles toned, and at a healthful weight
      • Increases self esteem
      • Improves productivity and academic performance in school
      • Helps you to live longer, healthier lives
      • Feels great!
      • Provides fun!


    2. Let’s Get Moving Activity: Tail Tag
      Equipment:
      • 1 scarf, bandanna, or fabric strip per student
      • 4 cones


      Description:
      • Set up a 20 x 20 yard activity area. Mark area with cones.
      • Before beginning, clearly state the rules of the game.
      • Each student tucks a small portion of a tail into the back of his pants.
        Shirttails should also be tucked inside pants.
      • Scatter students in the 20 x 20 yard activity area, each with a tail.
      • On signal (music or whistle), students should skip throughout the activity area attempting to pull the tails off other players.
      • Students who pull a tail must say “Gotcha” and hand the tail back to the owner.
      • Students who lose their tails must first pick up their tails and then do five jumping jacks outside the activity area before returning to the game.
        Note: For variation, change the re-entry task for players who have their tails pulled— i.e., jump rope, dribble a basketball, push-ups, sit-ups.


    3. Discuss ways students can participate in physical activity in school and at home. Help the students establish and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

    4. Assign the students to keep a “Let’s Get Physical” journal for one week identifying all physical activities in which they participate each day either in school or outside of school. Also, record the amount of time spent on these activities. Students can use either the journal handout or MS Word for the journaling exercise. Pictures of students participating in physical activity can be inserted into the electronic document. Students may use the USDA MyPyramid Tracker web site found in the technology tools and resources section to help with this assignment.

    5. At the end of the week, allow the students time to share with fellow students ways to be active and improve physical activity. Additionally, they may visit the Power Panther Calorie Challenge web site to review balance of energy intake and output.

    Assessment Procedures:
    Participation in Tail Tag Activity
    Oral responses to name the benefits of physical activity
    Completeness of journal entry.


    Accommodations/Modifications:
    Adapt physical activities for each student’s specific limitations. Teacher must follow special needs student's Individual Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Modification Plan.

    Explorations and Extensions:
    Have students track their physical activity once a month during the entire school year. Have the students note the changes in level of physical activity according to time in school, weather conditions, amount of homework, etc. Have the students develop a physical activity action plan to account for these obstacles.
