Primary Subject Area: Mathematics |
|
Grade Level: 1 - 2
|
|
Overview:
|
|
The students will use addition or subtraction to solve problems involving foods. This lesson can be used to teach health, nutrition, or food - related topics. |
|
Approximate Duration: 1 class period (50 minutes) |
Content Standards:
- Number and Number Relations
In problem-solving investigations, students demonstrate an understanding of the real number system and communicate the relationships within that system using a variety of techniques and tools.
|
Benchmarks:
- N-5-E
selecting appropriate operation(s) (add, subtract, multiply, and divide) for a given situation; (2,3,4)
|
Grade-Level Expectations (GLEs):
- Grade 1
15.
Recognize real-life situations as addition or subtraction problems
(N-4-E) (N-5-E) - Grade 2
7.
Know all basic facts for addition and subtraction and use them to solve real-life problems
(N-5-E) (N-6-E) (N-7-E) (N-8-E) (N-9-E)
8.
Recognize, select, connect, and use operations, operational words and symbols (+, -) for addition (join, part/part/whole) or subtraction (take away, comparison, missing addend, and set/subset) situations
(N-5-E) (N-6-E) |
Interdisciplinary Connections:
- Health Education : Standard 1
Students will comprehend concepts and strategies related to health
promotion and disease prevention.
|
Educational Technology Standards:
- Use technology resources to assist in problem-solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning activities.
( 2, 4 )
|
Objectives: The students will
- demonstrate use of an appropriate operation (addition or subtraction) for a given word problem.
- identify healthy snacks.
- discuss why its important to eat healthy snacks.
- explain why its necessary to eat at least 5 fruits and vegetables daily.

Background Information: Student have a knowledge of math stories/word problems and should be able to name a healthy snack. |
Lesson Procedures:
- Read Little Number Stories – Addition, pausing to let students offer solutions to the addition problems.
- Read Little Number Stories – Subtraction, pausing to let students offer solutions to the subtraction problems.
- Designate three (3) students to represent bananas in front of the class. Ask two (2) more students representing apples to join them. (Discuss fruit eaten with meals or as a healthy snack.) Ask, "What number sentence shows this action?"
- Ask the two (2) students representing apples to leave the group; then ask, "What number sentence shows this action?"
- Tell students, " We will practice solving more problems as a group. You can add or subtract to solve them."
- Ann has two (2) oranges. Sally brings five (5) more. How many are there?
- Dan had ten (10) grapes. Jan ate two (2). How many are left?
- Students will then complete the "Math Stories" practice sheet to solve more addition and subtraction problems by drawing pictures to illustrate the problems.
(Make up word problems using the number of servings recommended by MyPyramid for different foods: for example, if I had a piece of toast, a glass of milk, and an apple for breakfast, how many more fruits should I eat today?)
- Visit http://www.dole5aday.com
for information on servings each day.
- Students will discuss the importance of eating 2.5 cups of vegetables and 1.5 cups of fruits daily.

Accommodations/Modifications:
Consider different learning styles and abilities when planning this lesson. ----- written by Division of Nutrition Assistance
Teachers must follow special needs student's Individual Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Modification Plan.
NON READER (Below Grade-Level Reader/Writer)
1. Procedure #6: Allow Non Reader to use text to speech computer software (Read Please, Write Out Loud, Co Writer, Read and Write Gold, Kursweil 3000) to record written responses .
2. Procedure #3: Have students representing fruit to wear fruit hats or hold pieces of fruit so Non Reader will be able to keep track of discussion easier.
3. Procedure #5, #6: Pair Non Reader with fluent reader to insure comprehension of written materials during all procedures that require reading and comprehension skills.
4. Procedure #8: Show a movie or read a story about the importance of eating vegetables before discussion to encourage Non Reader to participate.
5. Procedure #6: Allow Non Reader to use fruit cutouts or magnetic fruit to demostrate math problems.
STUDENTS WITH PHYSICAL IMPAIRMENTS
1. Prodecure #1-#3, #7-#8: A student with limited mobility can be placed near the front of the room or activity to assure unobstructed visual contact with materials presented.
2. Procedure #1, #, #6: A student with limited arm, leg, and visual movements could use a keyboard overlay to exclude all but essential keys and /or alpha smart to record written responses.
3. Procedure # 6: A student with limited arm, leg, and visual movements could use large crayons and/or crayon holder.
4. Procedure # 3, # 6: A student with limited arm, leg, and visual movements could use clipboard and/or slanted board to elevate and hold materials.
5. Procedure # 1, #3, #4, #6-#8: A student with limited arm, leg, and visual movements could use a a bell or hand glued on a yard stick to raise hand when she/he wants to participate in discussions or provide an answer.
