Background Information: The student should have a basic understanding of dental care and how to prevent cavities.
|
Lesson Procedures:
- To introduce the activity, ask the following questions:
- How do turtles chew?
Answer: Ridges on the top of the mouth help them to chew.
- Which ocean animal has two sets of teeth?
Answer: The shark has teeth that grow in a membrane that continues to grow out of its mouth. When these teeth wear out, they drop from the membrane and new teeth grow in place of the old ones.
- Can children keep growing new teeth like sharks?
Answer: No. We have only two sets of teeth. Baby teeth are replaced by permanent teeth.
- Use a plastic model of teeth to demonstrate the cutting, tearing, and grinding of teeth.
- Explain that each tooth has a special job to do. Point out that each student has 20 baby teeth that will fall out and that these teeth will be replaced by 32 adult teeth.
- Explain that tooth decay or cavities may be caused by sugar forming an acid that eats holes in the surface of the tooth, causing decay. This decay, or hole, gets bigger if it is not repaired; it then becomes a cavity. Discuss the importance of choosing foods that will help keep teeth healthy.
- From the San Diego County Disease Prevention Program web site (Technology Connection section), select a storybook to read to the class.
- Use a plastic teeth model and toothbrush to demonstrate proper tooth brushing; make small circles on each tooth and brush away from the gums. After brushing the teeth, brush the tongue and rinse the mouth of the model.
- Have students demonstrate brushing teeth with a model. Tell them that eating nutritious foods will help keep teeth healthy and clean.
- Discuss other ways to keep teeth healthy (examples:brush at least twice a day, floss at least once a day, and visit the dentist office twice a year).
- Distribute to the students the activity sheet "Brush and Beam."
- Instruct the students to complete the activity sheet "Brush and Beam." They may glue black-eyed peas into the mouth to represent teeth that have not been brushed and glue white beans into the mouth to show healthy, clean teeth that have been brushed.
- Review with the students all the ways to keep teeth healthy.
