Obesity in children and adolescents is a serious health issue today. Overweight children are at risk for chronic diseases. Total diet and activity level play an important role in determining a child’s weight. In this lesson, students become familiar with the obesity epidemic and develop ways to combat it in the family and community. Students will research obesity trends among children and adolescents. This lesson can be used to teach English, health, physical activity, nutrition, and food-related topics. |

Background Information: The percent of children and adolescents who are overweight is now higher than ever before. Overweight children are at risk of becoming overweight adolescents and adults. Poor dietary habits and inactivity contribute to the increase of overweight in youth. |
Lesson Procedures:
- Write the words "Overweight," "At Risk for Being Overweight," and "Obese" on the Inspiration screen, chalkboard or overhead projector.
- Note to the students that being overweight as a teenager can increase their risk of being an overweight or obese adult. Some suggestions are listed below. Have the students identify major factors that cause children and adolescents to become at risk for being overweight and obese. Write their ideas on the screen, chalkboard, or projector
- High fat, high caloric food
- Decrease in physical activity
- Increase in fast food consumption
- More TV watching, computer and video games
- Super-sized portions
- Increase soft drink consumption
- Less activity in daily life
- Genetic factors
Group the ideas according to diet-related or physical activity-related factors.
- A student’s total diet and activity level play an important role in determining his/her weight. To maintain weight, intake of calories must equal energy output.
- ENERGY BALANCE
To maintain weight, intake of calories must equal calories used in activity
ENERGY INTAKE = ENERGY OUTPUT
Energy Intake--calories supplied from foods eaten
Energy Output--calories used during physical activity/exercise
- ENERGY IMBALANCE
WEIGHT GAIN
ENERGY INTAKE > ENERGY OUTPUT
WEIGHT LOSS
ENERGY INTAKE < ENERGY OUTPUT
- Class Activity: Using the websites listed in the technology section, students should research obesity trends in the U.S.
- Divide the class into small groups.
- Have the students complete the “Obesity Trends” worksheet located in the Reproducible Materials section. Answers can be found on the websites indicated in the Technology Section or students can use the TrackStar website that has all of the websites located on one site.
- Halt The Obesity Epidemic.
- The writer for the local newspaper has asked the students to write an article for the weekly health column. The title of the column is “Halt the Obesity Epidemic”. What can be done to halt the obesity epidemic?
Devise a plan to establish a lifetime of healthy habits. Summarize the information obtained in your research. This project can be completed using MS Word or Power Point if available.
- Allow each group 5-10 minutes to share their findings and plan to the class.
|
Assessment Procedures:
Oral responses to classroom discussion.
Written report and presentation on obesity trends in the U.S. and recommendations to “Halt the Obesity Epidemic” using the rubric. |
Accommodations/Modifications:
The subject of weight can be a very sensitive topic for some students. Conduct this lesson tactfully.
Teacher must follow special needs student's Individual Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Modification Plan. ----- written by Division of Nutrition Assistance
|
Reproducible Materials:
|
Explorations and Extensions:
- Develop a flyer using the information obtained in the research. Share the flyer with students in other classes and take the flyer home to share with parents.
- Have the students discuss which websites they felt were most useful and why.

Lesson Development Resources: |
Reflections: The terms "overweight" and "obese" are terms associated with health problems; however, the topics need to be introduced with sensitivity. |
